Cohort Entry

Following consultation with our community, the majority of respondents were in favour of cohort entry. Starting in 2026, our school will operate a cohort entry policy.

This means that new entrants (5-year-olds) start on a cohort date AFTER their 5th birthday. They can’t start before they turn 5, but must start before they turn 6. The cohort entry dates are set by the Ministry of Education each year.

Cohort entry helps children settle into school life and routines better. Starting school with others at the same time supports their emotional well-being, as they already have friends who are going through the same experience. Teachers can plan and support a new group of students at one time, minimising interruptions to the learning of the current students. It is also a great opportunity for your whānau to connect with other whānau and the school, as school visits and activities will be scheduled so parents come together in groups.

Starting School

Starting school is an
exciting time!

Our new entrant children will join Kāinga Waitā learning spaces where discovery and foundation skills are explored, and they are encouraged to learn through experience and imagination.

Although it can feel daunting to send your child off to school, there is a lot you can do to help prepare them. We have created a starting school guide to help you.
